What is Desktop Virtualization?
Desktop virtualization is a fundamentally different way of looking at an organization’s computer use. A ‘desktop computer’ is a machine fully capable of performing necessary functions on its own. A virtual desktop, then, can be thought of as a system which can appear to perform all of those functions without the use of an actual computer. This is achieved through performing the necessary functions on a central server, but accepting input and presenting output for those functions on a simple terminal, which may be little more than a screen and a keyboard. Desktop Virtualization provides the functionality of a desktop computer without having to provide the computer itself.
What are some of the benefits of Desktop Virtualization?
Hardware Provisioning – All of the necessary software and functionality is maintained on one central server. So instead of having to configure a new machine every time a new user arrives, or invest in and maintain a large inventory of expensive machines, simple, inexpensive terminals can be deployed easily, with no configuration required.
Reduced Downtime – Since usage is governed by a central system, there are far fewer points of failure to maintain and support. This translates directly into reduced downtime. When a terminal is found to be malfunctioning, it is often easier to simply ‘swap out’ the terminal to maintain productivity while the malfunctioning unit is repaired.
Lower Cost – Terminals or ‘thin clients’ are far less expensive than regular desktops, and require fewer and components.
Longer Hardware Lifecycle – Since little more than monitor output and keyboard and mouse input are usually required from the terminal, it takes much longer for the terminal to become obsolete. While traditional desktops rarely keep pace with software for more than three years, terminals can remain in use for more than a decade, and last through several server upgrades and even complete replacements.
Security and Focus – The server-client access model is far easier to maintain and monitor. All server usage can be logged in a central location, and desktop functionality can be directly limited to those functions related to an employee’s role in an organization. This enhances productivity by removing access to distracting applications and internet usage.
How do I know if Desktop Virtualization is a good solution for my organization?
Desktop Virtualization is not a solution for every organization. Organizations best served by desktop virtualization tend to have a large portion of their workforce devoted to a common, narrow set of tasks, such as a call center, inventory distribution center or sales floor. As with any solution, a Vaiz Enterprises desktop virtualization solution goes through four distinct phases:
Analysis of your organization to determine your particular business requirements, which can include personnel roles, duties, organizational difficulties and goals.
Design of a solution that will ensure those requirements are met. Once your company’s needs and requirements are understood, we can suggest whether or not a desktop virtualization solution is right for you.
When a virtualization design is established, Implementation of that design follows, and then,
Adaptation and Maintenance of the implementation once installed.
How does Vaiz Enterprises Complete Care offer a more realistic approach to desktop virtualization?
